 Scary Ride
The temps were down today and the Swamp Rabbit Trail was very crowded. I rode from the house to meet with the Swamp ROMP at the Swamp Rabbit Cafe. On the ride over the trail traffic was very heavy and there were several close calls just riding to the Cafe. Eight of us gathered at the Cafe - Joe, Jeff, Kathy, Kitty, Brad, Steve, Linda, and me. In the parking lot Steve was zipping around on his low riding 3-wheeled recumbent and was nearly hit by a woman backing out. She must have a warning as she stopped without seeing him. I saw in time to yell, but that would have been too late if she hadn't stopped. I rode at the back as normal with Linda most of the time. She has little to no bike control. She is slow, hard to pass, and can't pass others. She dismounts and walks across many of the intersections. She dismounted at Roe Ford Road then walked out in front of a moving car. I really thought that he had her. We rode on into TR then out to th enorth end of the trail. Once out of TR I took off and left the group to race to teh end then back to where they were. Then Jeff, Joe, and I rode back to the end again. We headed back to TR where Jeff failed to see a car. I yelled out "Car Right!" and he slammed on his brakes right at the car. That one was way to close, then Linda pulled out in front of a turning car and then again in front of a van before we got out of TR. This ride was makig me nervous! We rode back to the Cafe and I told the group that I needed to go mow while they were discussing how to get to MAC's for lunch. I got with Joe and told him to keep a close eye on Linda as they would be off the trail and she is hazardous enough on the trail. On the ride south I saw Chirs and Sheryl A riding north. Then there was a train on the tracks at Bramlett Street sos I turned back to ride around th etrain. I stopped at TTR to have my brakes checked and check the status of my order of a bracket and pannier. On the ride on home I came on a rider on East North Street wearing a Northwestern jersey. I told him that I was a Hawkeye. We rode together and chatted until I turned off East North into my neighborhood. What a ride!!
