Today I rode to Ken's home to ride up the Greenville side of the mountain with Ken, Mark, and Peter. I had never met Peter before although I had heard about him from Ken and Steve. I had never been to Ken's and I took a route of streets that I had never ridden before. I arrived there much earlier than I needed to so I cruised over to the Foxcroft pool and park area. The others came in and we took off. We rode from Ken's and he had a series of back streets to get us over there. We stopped at the convenience store at the base of the mountain. I filled my water bottle with ice and water and drank a 20-ounce Gatorade. We started up the mountain. The first 7/10ths of a mile is the worst of the climb. I was really struggling with th climb when I finally noticed that I wasn't in low gear. I finally shifted down but somehow on the wall I was in second gear again. I made about 130 yards of the 150 yards of 22% grade then I pulled off to rest. I must have dropped a quart of sweat while getting my breath back. The wall broke me on this climb. It was just a few months ago that I broke the wall easily. I really need to start including more climbing and lose weight. I made the rest of the mountain and up Tower Road to the top of the mountain. We rode back down the same side where we were tangled up in a bunch of cars. Once we were at the bottom we stopped at the convenience store and I filled my bottle with ice water and downed another bottle of Gatorade. When we were back at Pine Knoll I went straight to ride home while the others turned off to go toward Ken's. Even though the wall broke me and my legs are exhausted it was a good ride.
