This morning I drove to the Cafe to meet Jeff to ride. I started south and ran into him less than 1/2 mile from the cafe. Jeff stopped at the cafe and while talking to him a man under the Cedar Lane Road Bridge ran off the trail and wrecked headfirst into the riprap under the bridge. I told Jeff "That man is hurt." then rode down to him telling him to stay down. We took a while getting him out and making sure that he seemed okay. He insisted that he was fine, but I could see one thumb banged up and bleeding and his clothes had taken quite a beating. It just made me wonder how fine he was underneath those clothes. We walked back to the cafe with him and let him gather himself. HIs car was parked a little over a mile from there and he insisted on riding back. Jeff and I rode with him, but we ran into Legacy School had all of their students and parents walking on the trail. So the trail was clogged with several hundred students and their parents and we were stuck in the middle of it. We finally cleared that mess and got with Peter at his car. I showed him where his helmet was damaged and told him that it needs to be replaced. I also pointed out that he has a head injury and that needs to be checked out. He insisted that he was fine and drove off.
Then I told Jeff that we need to reconsider what we were about to do. If we went back up the trail we would be caught in that tassel of kids again. So we headed south. We rode back to downtown and through Linky Stone Park, Falls Park, the Cancer Survivors’ Park, and Cleveland Park. We went on out the south end and looped the YMCA on its trail and checked out some pull-offs along that trail. Once back on the SRT we rode to Faris Road then rode along Cleveland Street and climbed the big hill to Pleasantburg Drive. We went back down the hill and pulled into the Bolero Bowling Alley and Jeff went in to get a drink. We backtracked to Cleveland Park then went to the zoo entrance to stop at the restroom.I took the Surly in the restroom with me. Jeff thought that was funny. I told him in there that if they try to take my bike that I can give them a swirly. We pulled off the trail several times to look at things and tried to ride the Sliding Rock Trail, but it was closed.
I got a picture of Jeff posing with the Lion outside the Cancer Survivors’ Center. We rode back up by the Falls and stopped at Papi’s Tacos. I ordered a Squash and Bell Pepper Taco and an Al Pastor with lemonade. When I ate them I ended up with a Squash and Bell Pepper Taco and a Fried Fish Taco. I’m not sure how that happened as the fried fish taco cost more than the Al Pastor. Jeff needed to study, so he left to go home and study.
I needed to get some miles, so after Jeff left I went back up the trail. At the Sulphur Springs crossing a guy passed me and I latched onto his wheel. He pulled me about 2 1/2 miles up the trail and we chatted along the way. I turned off at Furman to loop the lake, then rode on toward Travelers Rest. I got off the trail at Old Buncombe Road and followed it to the Gazebo on the trial. I went north to my turn-around spot across from the creperie. I stopped by the Gazebo and took couple more scarecrow pix, then headed back down the trail. I stopped at the Furman Railroad car for a drink, then rode back to the truck outside the cafe.
